Escaping with only their lives, young immigrants, Rija and her husband Josef flee war-torn Bosnia. With their young daughter, they arrive in America with hopes of a new life. Only months after their arrival, Josef, lured away by dreams of easy money, abandons his family for a world of crime and violence. On her own, Rija strives to keep the family together. Determined to move off welfare, she lands a job and moves toward a better future. Just as things improve, a new family crisis threatens her plans and when Josef reappears, Rija in need of help, lets him back into her life. For a time reconciliation seems possible but while Rija works toward stability, Josef’s behavior goes from helpful to erratic. Often jobless, money still flows freely through his hands. His abrupt comings and goings and unknown sources of cash trouble her especially when she discovers hidden money and a gun. Following an arrest, the resourceful Josef finds a way to avoid jail time. Using his multilingual skills, he agrees to become a police informant, infiltrating the local Russian mafia and getting close to the local mob boss. When Rija seeks help, she finds she must take matters into her own hands.

Edge of a Dream A Novel of Passion Greed and Survival eBook Lee Fishman

This book was full of action and I never guessed what was coming next. At the same time, the story still had a heart and the descriptions and well-developed characters made me feel I was right there with Rija, on the streets of Philly. The stories from Rija's past during the war in Bosnia had a gritty realism and added depth and poignant background to the story of the family's struggle in the U.S. to achieve the "American dream." Fishman definitely did her homework on the research, and the details are woven into the story in a way that pulls the reader in and won't let you go.

Edge of a Dream A Novel of Passion Greed and Survival eBook Lee Fishman Reviews

This is really good book. I was very impressed how the book had 2 text and would talk about back in the day . Also how the Wife Rija was working has cleaner and going to school as Lawyer. Also How she was in USA on VISA, as all the right paper work. How her husband left her shortly after they came to the USA.How she did search's on her husband and couldn't find anything on him when she wanted to find him. Then out of the blue he comes to their house. Also how her mom gets hurts and she finds a similar case and talks to attorney but nothing more seems to get done from there. The grandmother lives with them and she speaks very little English but learning it from the TV shows. She is also a really good cleaner the landlord is very impressed with how tidy of person she is. The landlord understands that they are tight on $ and makes arrangements with them to help them pay him back. I love the research work that Rija does with her classmate to see what her husband is up to.
I was in total shock when I read what the father did next wow that shocked me .. I was very surprised when the husband took the daughter and the wife found her and got her back. That really impressed me. All the work she did to find her daughter that takes a lot. Then when she found out what she already knew that working for the mob. this book was really good book keep me on my toys I had to read it all in 1 day. WOW . Thanks for such a great book. I really wanted to know what happened next I was curious what going on next.

I highly recommend this book to other people
This is the story of a couple who fled war-devastated Sarajevo to make a new life for themselves in Philadelphia, PA. The marriage soon founders, though, as Josef takes off for Las Vegas, abandoning his family in search of easy money. This leaves Rija, her mother and their young daughter to fend for themselves, encountering hardships common to the immigrant experience. Rija takes a job cleaning offices. Money is tight, but she's determined to provide for her family and improve herself. When she isn't at work, she's attending classes to become a paralegal, and cares for her mother and daughter.

One day, Josef shows back up at the door, driving a stolen car and on the run from some gambling debts. Rija reluctantly takes him back, but the tenuous peace is soon shattered as Josef searches again for easy money, this time working for the Russian Mafia. Josef weaves together an assortment of lies and half-truths that doesn't fool his wife, who eventually realizes that she must make a choice between the much-needed money and support that Josef provides versus the peace of mind and her own chance at the American dream that she could attain without him.

I had trouble putting this book down! I felt that I was right alongside this family, in their apartment and involved in their decisions. The character development is excellent. I wanted to hold Rija's hand and yell at Josef. This is a very impressive first book and the author shows real writing talent. It's even well-edited with almost no grammatical errors - impressive for an indie book. I will definitely be watching for more books from this author.

Disclosure I was given a copy of this book to read and provide a fair and honest review.
This book is a story about Rija and Josef, two American immigrants from Bosnia. They immigrated with their daughter to get away from the war, in search of the American dream. What they found was hardship and heartache - Josef seems to have a knack for losing money finding trouble, and at the beginning of the book he's left his family and started a life of crime to pay for his gambling habits. Rija, now a single mother, is behind on all her bills, going to school to be a paralegal, and takes a job cleaning law offices.

When Josef hits a hard spot due to some people he double-crossed, he heads home again. Rija tries to take him back, but after two years gone it's hard - plus it doesn't seem as he's changed for the better at all. Josef's adventures continue to get them in trouble, including involving the Russian mafia! Rija must determine how to help her husband get clean and stay clean, and what the best thing for her family is.

This was a good book, and I really liked the character of Rija. She was hardworking, honest, and just wanted to do right by her family. I thought the story was well put together, and an interesting view of immigrant life in America.
Book held my interest from page one. Could not put this book down. Cannot wait until author publishes second book.
Lee Fishman's novel about a couple who escaped the war in Sarajevo and their struggles to make it in America is a study in contrasts. Rija, a young wife and mother, confronts the challenges of her new life in Philadelphia with gritty determination. Her husband, the charming Josef, drifts into a life of crime and manages to turn up with piles of cash and trouble at just the wrong time. The action starts early and keeps building. This is a great read!
